BCS Practitioner Certificate in Data Protection

The BCS Practitioner Certificate in Data Protection is designed for candidates with some existing data protection responsibilities, wishing to gain a broader understanding of current laws, including the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018.

Target Audience

This course is intended for people who have existing responsibilities in data protection and have a basic understanding of relevant legislation.

Duration

This course is delivered over 5 days. The course can be run in blocks or a day each week for 5 consecutive weeks. The exam is usually scheduled two – four weeks after course delivery.

Assessment

The course is usually held over 5 days, followed by separate assessments.  For those wishing to achieve the Certificate, there is an extended answer exam usually held 2 – 4 weeks after course delivery.  For those who would like to achieve the Diploma, in addition to passing the extended answer exam they must successfully complete a work-based assignment.

The course content will be continually updated to reflect current legislation applicable in the UK.   It addresses requirements of the GDPR as well as relevant UK data protection law and covers:

  • Special categories of personal data and information about criminal convictions
  • Rights of the data subject
  • Responsibilities of controllers and processors

  • Transfers to third countries and international organisations
  • The role of the Information Commissioner and relevant offences

Assessment

There are up to three assessments that are completed as part of this course:

  1. The first is a 1 hour multiple choice exam, usually held on the afternoon of day 3.  Successful candidates will be awarded the Certificate in Data Protection Compliance.
  2. The second assessment is a 2.5 hour extended answer exam, usually run 2 to 4 weeks after the course.  Successful candidates will be awarded the Certificate in Managing Data Protection Compliance.
  3. The final assessment is a work-based assignment.  Those that successfully complete the assignment will be awarded the Diploma in Managing Data Protection Compliance.

Please note that this is a progressive award scheme and therefore candidates must achieve the pass mark in each assessment before being eligible to move on to the next level.
